Password Manager Comparison

Recently at Marine Travelift, we’ve switched password managers, so I want to compare the old one with the new one.

ManageEngine PAM360

URL: https://www.manageengine.com/privileged-access-management/

Price: Enterprise-level quote only

Pros:

  • It can do much more than just password management, such as account and session management, user behavior analytics, or encryption key and certificate lifecycle management.
  • You don’t need to be on the company network in order to access your passwords.
  • Apparently, the pricing is competitive although I can’t confirm that myself.

Cons:

  • I remember needing to use their website in order to set some things up, which was annoying because the browser extension should be able to cover everything (or at least redirect to the website itself when needed).
  • Your passwords are not protected by MFA.
  • I also remember the autofill and autosave features not really working.

Ease of Use: A less secure login process, while less secure, is more convenient. However, some of the main functionality of a password manager not working makes it more difficult to use than necessary.

Keeper Security

URL: https://www.keepersecurity.com/

Price: There is variable business pricing, $40/year for personal, $85/year for family, 30% off for military/medical, and 50% off for students.

Pros:

  • Your passwords are extremely secure because of MFA, device-level encryption, and continuous third-party penetration testing.
  • As long as you’re logged in, passwords will autofill, and you can even save new passwords directly from the login page.
  • It tells you how secure your passwords are, and it can even check the dark web for you.

Cons:

  • Passwords cannot be access off of the company network.
  • Apparently, technical support isn’t as useful as it could be.
  • Password management for mobile apps is not provided.

Ease of Use: Even though logging in to use the tool is more involved, I appreciate the security. Besides, the tool actually works, which saves you from manually finding the user you need.
